The Increase of ICE Raids in 2025
At the beginning of July 2025, there were approximately 60,000 immigrants being held in ICE custody, which is more than 140 percent of detention capacity. More than 70 percent of these immigrants have never had a criminal record, while 93 percent have never been convicted of a violent offense. From February through until May, ICE had detained approximately 20,000 people every month. This is a 300 percent increase from the same timeframe in 2024.
The efforts of the Trump administration to rapidly increase the number of raids and apprehensions has gone beyond those conducted in previous years. ICE has begun targeting immigrants at private homes, university campuses, farms, and workplaces. There has also been an exponential increase in apprehensions conducted during random traffic stops. At one time, there were policies prohibiting ICE raids in these sensitive locations, but those policies have been rescinded.
