Immigration8

In the United States, foreign-born individuals that were living in the country were just under 45 million in 2018 according to the Pew Research Center. The immigrant population in the country is growing and has quadrupled since 1965 meaning that when compared to the entire population in the U.S. foreign-born individuals makeup 13.7% of that population. Interestingly, even though this number is almost three times what it was in 1970, in 1890 the country had a record number of immigrants per population at 14.8%.

Immigrants come from every part of the world because so many people from all over aspire to live in the United States and benefit from all of the opportunities and the lifestyle the country offers. But when it comes to which countries have the most people coming to the United States, there are three that consistently report the highest numbers.

Where Are the Most Immigrants to the United States Coming From?

Out of all of the immigrants in the country, those coming from Mexico make up the largest number traveling to stay in the United States. In 2018, 25% of all of the immigrants in the country were from Mexico. This made up approximately 11.2 million people.

Next, China, which for the study’s purpose included Macau, Taiwan, Mongolia, and Hong Kong, came in number two for most immigrants in the country. Those coming from these regions made up 6% of the immigrants coming to the U.S. Tied with China was India also around 6%. Then people from the Philippines made up 4% of the immigrants and El Salvador rounded out the top five countries with 3% that had the most people immigrating to America.

And even though Mexico makes up such a large portion of immigrants in the country, in 2009 there were higher numbers of Asian immigrants by race and ethnicity than there were Hispanics. It is estimated that in 2055 the largest group of people arriving in the United States would be Asian and their numbers are projected to far surpass that of Hispanics that show up.
